What to Expect

Join us in beautiful Baja in search of the largest fish in the world, the incredible whale shark! Growing up to lengths of forty feet, roughly the size of a bus, these gentle giants are tens of millions of years old, and encountering one in the water is much like meeting with a prehistoric being from an ancient age.

Peaceful, relaxed, and ludicrously big, whale sharks are both slow-moving and curious, which makes them one of the best marine animals to swim with. October is the BEST time of year to see these amazing animals in crystal clear waters, and the first time you spot one swimming towards you is a heart-stopping and deeply moving moment.

For this expedition, we base ourselves out of a gorgeous eco-lodge in Bahía de los Ángeles. The main attraction is undoubtedly the whale sharks, but we’ll also be looking out for fin whales, humpback whales, blue whales, and large pods of common and bottlenose dolphins. Although not common, there is also a rare chance we might encounter orcas, false orcas, and sperm whales.

We are PASSIONATE about marine life and ensuring that our expeditions are a force for good when it comes to protecting the ocean we love so much.

Sadly, whale shark trips have become very commercialised in some parts of the world. You may have seen videos of people swimming alongside whale sharks drifting through crystal clear water… it looks calm, magical, almost unreal.

However, often just outside of the frame, whale shark encounters have become overcrowded and unethical. In places like the Philippines, whale sharks are commonly baited and lured in with food to keep them in one spot, disrupting their natural feeding behaviors and migratory patterns. Overcrowding is also a big problem in the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Maldives. It’s not uncommon to see dozens of people, or sometimes even as many as 100 people, surrounding a single whale shark.

We were determined to do things very differently, and spent a long time searching for the right spot with the right conditions.

This meant many a reconnaissance mission down bumpy roads and across choppy seas, but after many trips and a lot of research, we have found the perfect place to swim with whale sharks… wild, natural, and on their terms. Bahía de los Ángeles is that place.

Each year between June and November, whale sharks migrate into this remote corner of the Sea of Cortez, drawn by dense blooms of plankton in the nutrient-rich waters. There’s no baiting, no manipulation, no guarantees… just the rare opportunity to enter their world as respectful observers while they feed naturally in their habitat.

And when you slip into the water beside them, you understand why this is on so many bucket lists. These gentle giants, the largest fish on Earth, can grow up to 12 meters long, yet move with a quiet grace that feels almost surreal. Completely harmless to humans, they glide slowly beneath the surface, offering an experience that feels both humbling and deeply peaceful.

Closer to shore, we’ll also have the chance to snorkel with playful sea lions, known for their curiosity and energy in the water, often creating some of the most unforgettable interactions of the trip.

We also partner with local conservation efforts to give you a deeper, hands-on connection to the marine life in this region. You’ll have the opportunity to join an educational session on sea turtles and, depending on timing and conditions, participate in real on-the-ground conservation work. This can include assisting researchers with measuring and tagging turtles, learning about ongoing protection efforts, and even releasing baby sea turtles from a local sanctuary as they make their first journey into the ocean.

We stay in A VERY special eco-lodge (a secret location that we can’t share until we take you there), where you can often see migrating whales passing offshore or dolphins playing in the bay.

When not on the water, expect incredible sunsets of pink, purpose and gold as we hang out around a crackling beach bonfire (we might even break out the guitars) after chowing don on delicious family-style Mexican cuisine prepared by our very own Norma, our artisanal Mexican chef, whose cooking transforms the group into a family vibe. We are a family business and take pride in creating the right vibe for you to socialise if you want to, or chill if you don’t.

Fresh coffee, pancakes and eggs kick things off every morning whilst we watch the sunrise turn the beach pink and keep our eyes peeled for whale sharks, dolphins, whales and so many different birds that can be viewed from our breakfast spot.

Itinerary

Your Baja adventure begins with an early start as leave Lerato by 10am and hit the road upon a scenic desert road trip that sets the tone for the magic ahead. We’ll collect you from your hotel, then board our private shuttle and head north across the vast and wild landscapes of Baja California.

The drive unfolds with towering cacti dotting the horizon, jagged mountains shifting in the distance, and glimpses of the Sea of Cortez sparkling alongside us. Sink into the rhythm of Baja, and soak up the raw, untamed beauty of this peninsula. We will stop to stretch your legs on a gorgeous beach, and another time for lunch in a local restaurant.

Our destination is the fabled and magical Bahia Los Angeles.

We settle into our eco lodge, exhale, and gather for a welcome dinner prepared by Norma. As the sun sets over the bay, we open the circle and begin the expedition together.

Our family-team will introduce ourselves and give a short presentation on what we may see upon the morrow. We’ll share our first campfire on the beach together and swap favourite ocean facts before retiring to our comfortable rooms. Our accommodation here is really special and you will be able to walk along the beach, catch spectacular sunrises and hear the ocean from your room as you drift to sleep.

Dinner

  • Possible sightings of Bryde’s whales, sperm whales, or even the elusive blue whale

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, after two early starts, we slow down and deepen our understanding of the ecosystem and location we are exploring.

We visit our conservation partner, Grupo Tortuguero, a community-driven sea turtle conservation network working across northwest Mexico to protect these ancient marine travelers and strengthen coastal ecosystems.

Bahía de los Ángeles is home to five species of sea turtles. Grupo Tortuguero combines scientific research with local ecological knowledge to protect nesting beaches and monitor feeding grounds and we are proud to support their work! For every guest we bring to Bahia de los Angeles, we make a $100 donation to this project. This is covered in your trip fee but if you would like to make an additional donation you can do so.

  • Visiting nesting beach sites
  • Learning about hatchling protection and releases
  • Observing in-water monitoring programs
  • Participating in data collection such as measuring and tagging
  • Visiting a beach camp where conservation teams work and socialize while monitoring turtle nets

This is hands-on conservation and community collaboration - not passive tourism and we'll have the opportunity to roll up our sleeves and get involved in some useful work.

We return to camp for a nourishing meal prepared by Norma in the afternoon.

Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch

These are our deep-dive ocean days.

We awaken early to take advantage of the flattest conditions on the water and after enjoying sunrise and fresh coffee, we head out for full-day boat excursion exploring different parts of the bay (exactly where we can go on the day depends on wind conditions).

Every day on the water is different and you never know what you may see - in the past, groups have spotted blue whales and even orcas although this is rare.

We hope though that each day will bring multiple whale shark encounters. Another may surprise us with dolphins, sea lions, or seasonal fin whales passing through the Sea of Cortez.

We follow all guidelines for ethical wildlife interaction, check out our FAQs section if you want more information. Encounters are calm, respectful, and regulated and the animals welfare always comes first.

Outside of incredible marine interactions, you can expect tasty food galore!

Norma prepares something new each night, perhaps fresh ceviche from the day’s catch, handmade enchiladas, slow-simmered mole, warm tortillas, seasonal salsas. Her cooking is authentic, artisanal, and rooted in generational recipes and tradition. Meals here feel like being welcomed into a Mexican family home.

For those interested, Norma runs an optional cooking class during free time one afternoon.

On our final evening in this magical place, we have a fire (with an optional fire ceremony in which you can choose to write and then burn something you wish to let go of, or something you hope will come true) beneath the stars and recount the highlights of our time together.

Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch
Day 06 :
Departure

We leave camp early and begin the scenic drive back to Loreto.

Desert mountains, cactus forests, and ocean views accompany us one last time.

Drop-offs at hotels in Loreto around 5pm and the expedition officially ends here.

The Heart of the Experience: Food & Community

A huge part of what makes this expedition so special is the food and the community dynamic that surrounds it. We are a family business at heart, and that shows up most beautifully around the dinner table.

Think rich, slow-simmered mole. Fresh handmade enchiladas. Bright ceviche made with the catch of the day. Warm tortillas. Seasonal salsas. Local ingredients. Every day is different, and we strive to make every meal feel like being welcomed into a Mexican family home.

Food connects us. It slows us down. It opens conversation. It is one of the most powerful ways to experience culture and we share most of our meals together on this trip in a communal atmosphere.

There is also an optional cooking class with Norma, where guests can step into the kitchen, learn her techniques, and understand the stories behind the recipes. It is always one of the most loved moments of the trip.

Expect plentiful marine wildlife, evenings around the bonfire, stargazing under desert skies, salt flat and bird sanctuary excursions, and slow moments on the beach with a good book. This is more than a trip. It is a journey into deep connection, wild beauty, and the mystery of the sea.

Where You'll Stay

Our home for the expedition is a special one. Sitting right on the shore of the bay, it’s a family-run eco lodge with deep roots in the region – originally established as a sea turtle research and rescue centre. The founders spent decades working to protect the region’s marine life, and that spirit of conservation runs through everything here. It’s rustic, remote, and genuinely wonderful. Think beachfront cabins, incredible sunrise views over the bay, and the kind of stillness that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Why Travel Baja With Us?

Baja California is one of the most remote and ecologically rich regions in North America. Stretching over 760 miles from the U.S. border to the tip of the peninsula, it’s a wild blend of desert, mountains, and two dramatically different coastlines: the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. On land, you’ll find vast salt flats, towering cacti, and rugged volcanic ranges where few people have ever roamed. Some areas have a population density of less than one person per square mile; it’s truly like visiting another planet!

In the sea, it’s a whole other world: the Sea of Cortez, called “the world’s aquarium” by Jacques Cousteau, is home to over 900 species of fish, five species of sea turtles, and a third of the world’s marine mammal species. The region remains largely untouched by mass tourism, and many of the places we visit are only accessible via bumpy backroads, boat rides, and a hearty dose of insider knowledge. It’s this mix of inaccessibility and wild beauty that makes Baja so special. It’s not just a destination, it’s one of the last places on Earth where nature still feels raw, untamed, and full of magic.

That being said, Baja is logistically challenging and is not the easiest place to navigate alone. Cell service fades, roads turn to sand, and the real magic lies in places that don’t show up on TripAdvisor. That’s where we at Elsewheria step in.

Elsewheria’s mission is to bridge the gap between untouched wilderness and curious travelers. When you choose to join one of our adventures, you’re not just signing up for a trip, you’re unlocking experiences few people ever get to have, all while being supported by a team who knows the land, loves the ocean, and lives for this kind of magic.

Traveling with Elsewheria means fully immersing in this natural wonderland with zero logistics to worry about. Our off-grid eco-lodges, private chef, and expert guides ensure an intimate, safe, and deeply moving experience where you’ll come us as strangers but leave as family

What an awesome week with this family-run expedition outfit!! Will and Audy researched all our experiences meticulously before this retreat, and it showed! Every activity was incredible, from snorkeling with whale sharks, to diving with sea lions, to a brilliantly narrated humpback whale encounter, all the operators and their equipment and processes were carefully vetted so we could just enjoy the natural splendor of Baja’s marine life. The in-between times were also fantastic, with simple but beautiful lodging and home-cooked, family style meals that were mouthwateringly good!! Give this family and their new company a try. They might change the way you think about how you’re spending your life! We will definitely return for more as soon as we can!!

Our 7-day Baja gray whale expedition was nothing short of extraordinary-truly one of the most meaningful travel experiences my husband and I have ever had. From the very beginning, what set this journey apart was the warmth and care of the family-run operation. You immediately feel welcomed. The personal attention throughout the week made the experience feel intimate, relaxed, and deeply authentic. The home-cooked meals were outstanding—fresh, nourishing, and prepared with love. Sitting down together after a day on the water, sharing delicious food and stories, added a beautiful sense of community.

An incredible agency dedicated to authentic, genuine, once in a lifetime experiences. I had the best week with them in Baja, looking whales in the eyes and singing songs around the campfire. The food was DELICIOUS and the group dynamic made the trip super enjoyable as I was coming alone! Will 100% be back! Thank you!

I had an amazing week with ELSEWHERIA on their Grey Whale excursion. The interaction with the whales was amazing but what really made the experience special was the wonderful family environment and sense of community that I felt with the ELSEWHERIA team. The food was outstanding and sitting under the stars around a fire while being serenaded with song was lovely.

One of the best experiences of my life. Between physical contact with eschrichtius robustus in the Laguna Ojo de Liebre and the up to 40 whale and dolphin species in the sea of Cortes, the ultimate fix for the cetacean inclined person. All while being pampered by Will, Audy and her parents. Audy's mom is a professional Mexican chef and was cocking for us tirelessly. The event was rounded off by evenings at the bonfire, playing cards and singing songs.

The Albanian alps were absolutely spectacular! The trip was everything I hoped for and more. I loved staying along Lake Koman and soaking in the incredible views but also the challenge of hiking the Valbona pass. It’s an adventure tour without being “too much”. It attracted a cool bunch of people who I’m very grateful to have met. You can tell the itinerary has been created with a lot of love and attention. The evening meal debriefs about the day were some of my favourite times. Highly recommend

Spending a week in Baja with Elsewheria was by far the most incredible experience of my life. Every day felt thoughtfully planned to make the most of this wild place — from time on the water with gray whales to exploring desert landscapes. The days on the water left me speechless of joy. The land activities gave me a family vibe that I have rarely ever had in any group. Huge thanks to the team for creating something so special. I've recommended already to my friends and hope it will always keep their real and authentic character. It has been epic.
