To secure your spot, we require a deposit of $750 for our Whale Shark Expedition. The deposit is non-refundable once paid. However, if cancelling 120 or more days before departure, the deposit may be transferred as credit to another trip within 24 months of the original departure date.
The remaining balance is then paid in two instalments: 50% of the remaining balance is due 150 days before departure, the final balance is due 90 days before departure.

Most Baja wildlife tours are exactly that: wildlife tours. A boat, a briefing, a quick snorkel, back to the hotel. Incredible, yes. But there’s another way to do this.
We base ourselves in Bahía de los Ángeles, a remote corner of the Sea of Cortez where whale sharks gather each year between June and November to feed naturally on rich plankton blooms. No baiting, no crowds, just open water and the animal on its own terms. Slip into the sea and there it is: the largest fish on Earth, a shadow the size of a bus rising slowly out of the blue, moving with a grace that feels completely at odds with its scale. Swim alongside one and time seems to slow down with it.
Some days the water is so clear you can see the whole animal from nose to tail before you’re even in beside it, and the first moment it turns an eye towards you is something people talk about for years.
Beyond swimming with whale sharks, we spend our days exploring the deep offshore waters of the Canal de Ballenas (Whales Channel), home to some of the ocean’s most iconic marine life. Depending on conditions, we may encounter blue, fin, and humpback whales, along with large pods of common and bottlenose dolphins. Although much rarer, orcas, false killer whales, and sperm whales are also occasionally seen, with false killer whales most commonly encountered during the summer and fall.
Our adventure isn’t just about wildlife viewing. You’ll also take part in a local sea turtle conservation project, supporting ongoing efforts to protect these incredible animals and the ecosystems they call home.
The remoteness of Bahía de los Ángeles makes every day feel like a true marine safari. With nature leading the way, every expedition is completely unique.
Back on shore, Norma works her magic: moles, handmade enchiladas, fresh ceviche, warm tortillas. Evenings close around a bonfire under Baja’s vast desert sky, with people who started the week as strangers and won’t feel like it by the end.
No two days on the water are ever the same. That’s exactly the point. Come ready to surrender to it.
Your Baja adventure begins with an early start as leave Loreto by 10am and hit the road upon a scenic desert road trip that sets the tone for the magic ahead. We’ll collect you from your hotel, then board our private shuttle and head north across the vast and wild landscapes of Baja California.
The drive unfolds with towering cacti dotting the horizon, jagged mountains shifting in the distance, and glimpses of the Sea of Cortez sparkling alongside us. Sink into the rhythm of Baja, and soak up the raw, untamed beauty of this peninsula. We will stop to stretch your legs on a gorgeous beach, and another time for lunch in a local restaurant.
Our destination is the fabled and magical Bahia Los Angeles.
We settle into our eco lodge, exhale, and gather for a welcome dinner prepared by Norma. As the sun sets over the bay, we open the circle and begin the expedition together.
Our family-team will introduce ourselves and give a short presentation on what we may see upon the morrow. We’ll share our first campfire on the beach together and swap favourite ocean facts before retiring to our comfortable rooms. Our accommodation here is really special and you will be able to walk along the beach, catch spectacular sunrises and hear the ocean from your room as you drift to sleep.
Start your morning how you like, and pop in to our communal kitchen anytime between 6-7am where Norma will have coffee and pancakes at the ready! The horizon glows pink and gold as the sun rises over Bahía de los Ángeles, easily one of the most breathtaking sunrises in Baja.
After breakfast, we head to the marina and begin our full-day ocean expedition.
We’ll spend the day searching for whale sharks, the largest fish on Earth. These gentle filter-feeders glide slowly through the water, allowing us to snorkel alongside them under strict conservation guidelines to keep them safe.
Until you have swum with a whale shark, it’s truly impossible to understand the sheer scale and majesty of these amazing animals. We’ve had guests cry before after their first experience, and we hope that it’s a powerful and beautiful experience for you, too!
We return mid-afternoon to rest, rinse salt from our skin, and enjoy some free time to walk the beach, sunbathe, play cards, read a book in the hammock, or recount the day's events!
Dinner is homemade, always an absolute feast, and shared family-style. We can cater to dietary requirements, so just let us know in advance, and we’ll have you covered. After dinner, we gather on the beach with a bonfire beneath Baja’s vast desert sky, stories drifting upward with the sparks as we reflect on the day.
Today, after two early starts, we slow down and deepen our understanding of the ecosystem and location we are exploring.
We visit our conservation partner, Grupo Tortuguero, a community-driven sea turtle conservation network working across northwest Mexico to protect these ancient marine travelers and strengthen coastal ecosystems.
Bahía de los Ángeles is home to five species of sea turtles. Grupo Tortuguero combines scientific research with local ecological knowledge to protect nesting beaches and monitor feeding grounds and we are proud to support their work! For every guest we bring to Bahia de los Angeles, we make a $100 donation to this project. This is covered in your trip fee but if you would like to make an additional donation you can do so.
This is hands-on conservation and community collaboration - not passive tourism and we'll have the opportunity to roll up our sleeves and get involved in some useful work.
We return to camp for a nourishing meal prepared by Norma in the afternoon.
We awaken early to take advantage of the flattest conditions on the water and after enjoying sunrise and fresh coffee, we head out for full-day boat excursion exploring different parts of the bay (exactly where we can go on the day depends on wind conditions).
We spend some time with the whale sharks in the bay and then continue onwards to the deep waters of the "Whale Channel" to search for incredible pelagic species. Every day on the water is different and you never know what you may see. There are chances to encounter blue whales, humpback whales, fin whales, large pods of common and bottlenose dolphins, and even orcas, false killer whales, and sperm whales, although the latter are much rarer.

Outside of incredible marine interactions, you can expect tasty food galore!
Norma prepares something new each night, perhaps fresh ceviche from the day’s catch, handmade enchiladas, slow-simmered mole, warm tortillas, and seasonal salsas. Her cooking is authentic, artisanal, and rooted in generational recipes and tradition. Meals here feel like being welcomed into a Mexican family home.
For those interested, Norma runs an optional cooking class during free time one afternoon.
We leave camp early and begin the scenic drive back to Loreto.
Desert mountains, cactus forests, and ocean views accompany us one last time.
Drop-offs at hotels in Loreto around 5pm and the expedition officially ends here.
Our home for the week is a special one. Each room has its own unique character. Originally built as sea turtle research classrooms, the property has been thoughtfully renovated into charming boutique accommodation while preserving its original character. Every room is air-conditioned, includes a private bathroom, and is just a short stroll from the beach. While layouts and décor vary slightly from room to room, each offers the same comfort, amenities, and peaceful island atmosphere that make this space so special.
From June through November, whale sharks drift into the waters of Bahía de los Ángeles to feed on the bay’s rich plankton blooms. Like most wild things, they don’t follow a strict timetable, showing up and settling in a little differently from year to year.
June to August: The season begins as whale sharks move into the bay, drawn by the plankton blooms building in the warming waters.
September: The bay fills out as more whale sharks arrive to feed, and encounters become steadier. Water clarity is good, making for excellent visibility in the water.
October: This is peak season, with the highest concentration of whale sharks and the clearest water of the year. It’s the month most likely to deliver multiple encounters in a single day. The offshore waters remain just as exciting as September.
November: The season winds down as sharks begin dispersing from the bay.
Peak season: Late September through early October offers the best combination of whale shark abundance and exceptional water visibility. While whale sharks are the focus of our expeditions, every day offshore holds the possibility of encountering whales, dolphins, and other pelagic wildlife that make the Sea of Cortez one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on the planet
The expedition is led by our experienced guides and Baja family team, who, between them, bring decades of knowledge of the Sea of Cortez, deep roots in the local community, and a professional Mexican chef whose cooking turns every meal into an event. On the water, we work with experienced local captains who know these currents intimately. On shore, the food, the fires, and the good vibes are very much taken care of.
Meet Erika: Oceanographer and Marine Biologist
Erika is an oceanographer with a master’s degree in Marine Ecology, devoted to the conservation of sea turtles and the sustainable management of marine natural resources. For over 15 years, she has worked hand in hand with coastal communities, protecting marine ecosystems while supporting the well-being of the people who depend on them.
Her journey has also taken her through a decade in nature tourism, where she had the privilege of guiding people from around the world to experience the ocean not just as a place, but as a living, breathing system we are all part of.
Today, her work is centred on scientific and immersive tourism, creating experiences that inspire awareness, connection, and responsibility. She is passionate about fostering a regenerative approach that honours marine life and recognises its essential role in sustaining our planet and our future.

A long-term resident of Baja, Andy knows these dusty roads and shifting currents like the back of his oil-streaked hands. He keeps the expedition moving, fixes whatever needs fixing with a kind of quiet genius, and remains completely unflappable, whatever the day throws at him.
He is also, it turns out, an excellent guitarist – and if you’re lucky, he’ll pull it out around the fire on a star-filled Baja night and round off the perfect day in the most perfect way possible.
Baja California is one of the most remote and ecologically rich regions in North America. Stretching over 760 miles from the U.S. border to the tip of the peninsula, it’s a wild blend of desert, mountains, and two dramatically different coastlines: the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. On land, you’ll find vast salt flats, towering cacti, and rugged volcanic ranges where few people have ever roamed. Some areas have a population density of less than one person per square mile; it’s truly like visiting another planet!
In the sea, it’s a whole other world: the Sea of Cortez, called “the world’s aquarium” by Jacques Cousteau, is home to over 900 species of fish, five species of sea turtles, and a third of the world’s marine mammal species. The region remains largely untouched by mass tourism, and many of the places we visit are only accessible via bumpy backroads, boat rides, and a hearty dose of insider knowledge. It’s this mix of inaccessibility and wild beauty that makes Baja so special. It’s not just a destination, it’s one of the last places on Earth where nature still feels raw, untamed, and full of magic.

You’ll be flying into Loreto International Airport (IATA: LTO), located in Baja California Sur, Mexico. This is the gateway to our adventure and where we’ll kick things off. Loreto is a small, charming seaside town with a walkable center, colorful colonial buildings, and a relaxed, welcoming vibe, perfect for an extra night before or after your expedition. Once you book your trip, we’ll send you a travel guide we’ve put together for Loreto.
We ask all guests to stay in Loreto the night before the trip begins so we can start the next morning smoothly. You’ll need to arrange your own transport and accommodation in Loreto for the day before the trip.
On Day 1, we’ll pick you up from your hotel in Loreto between 9 am and 10 am. At the end of the trip, we return to Loreto between 4 pm and 6 pm and can drop you off either at the airport or back at your accommodation in town, depending on your onward plans.
Yes, the regions we explore in Baja California are considered safe for tourism. We intentionally avoid any high-risk areas and work exclusively with trusted local guides, drivers, and accommodations. Our route focuses on quiet coastal towns and natural reserves far from urban centers, offering both peace of mind and wild serenity. As always, basic travel safety practices apply. We do require guests to have fully comprehensive travel insurance, which should include flight cancellations and delays.
Absolutely. Many of our guests join solo! Small groups, remote locations, and days spent sharing extraordinary experiences together - it tends to do the work naturally. People connect quickly out here, and it's not unusual to leave with friendships that stick.

Yes! We take food seriously and inclusively. Most meals on the trip are prepared by our private Mexican chef (aka the founder’s stepmom!), and we can accommodate a wide range of dietary requirements and preferences. Whether you’re vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, or have allergies, we’ve got you covered. Just let us know in advance and we’ll make sure every meal is both safe and satisfying. We do, however, recommend you bring snacks - protein bars / nuts / jerky - if you have specific dietary requirements as our snacks on travel-days are usually store-bought and we can't always get good vegetarian or vegan snacks in Baja.

Our base for the expedition is a special one. Sitting right on the shore of the bay, it’s a family-run eco lodge with deep roots in the region – originally established as a sea turtle research and rescue centre. The founders spent decades working to protect the region’s marine life, and that spirit of conservation runs through everything here. It’s rustic, remote, and genuinely wonderful. Think beachfront cabins, incredible sunrise views over the bay, and the kind of stillness that’s hard to find anywhere else.
All shared rooms on our trips have 2 people per room, each with their own bed. Rooms are a good size and do not feel cramped, and rooms have their own bathroom. We will partner you with an adventure buddy of the same gender - a great way to make new friends! If you're booking as a pair, just let us know, and we'll make sure you’re roomed together. We follow established guidelines that keep encounters calm and respectful. This includes maintaining distance, entering the water quietly, avoiding sudden movements, and ensuring the shark always has a clear path. Yes. Whale sharks visit Bahía de los Ángeles seasonally to feed on plankton. They are not fed or lured. Ethical operators never chase or corner them; if a shark isn’t interested in interacting, we simply let it move on.
Whale sharks are an endangered species, and the regulations are designed to minimise human impact. These rules help protect the sharks’ health and ensure that future generations can experience them in the wild.
Licensed operators follow strict navigation rules, including slow speeds, predictable movements and keeping distance from feeding sharks. These measures reduce noise, stress and the risk of accidental collisions.
Only a small number of swimmers can enter the water with a shark at any given time. This prevents crowding and allows the shark to move freely without feeling surrounded.
It’s completely normal to feel that way. Our guides give a clear briefing before entering the water and stay close throughout the encounter. Their role is to help you feel confident, calm, and respectful so the experience is positive for both you and the shark

The whale sharks in Bahía de los Ángeles are here completely naturally. They migrate into this region each year to feed on dense blooms of plankton in the Sea of Cortez.
We do not use bait, food, or any form of attraction. We simply go out and respectfully search for them in their natural habitat, and any interaction happens entirely on their terms.
This means sightings are not “manufactured”… they’re real, wild encounters.
No, and that’s part of what makes this special.
These are wild animals in the open ocean, and we never interfere with their behavior to guarantee an encounter.
That said, Bahía de los Ángeles is a known seasonal aggregation site, and we plan our expeditions during peak months when whale sharks are most commonly present to feed.
Yes, when done responsibly, swimming with whale sharks is very safe.
Whale sharks are gentle giants. They’re the largest fish in the ocean, but they feed on plankton and small fish, not humans. They’re naturally calm and non-aggressive, and encounters are peaceful and slow-paced.
That said, safety comes from doing it the right way.
We operate with experienced guides and follow strict protocols in the water. This includes keeping a respectful distance, entering the water calmly, and never touching or chasing the animals. Our team is there to guide you every step of the way so you feel comfortable and confident.
We also choose locations and conditions carefully, only going out when it’s safe and appropriate.
For most people, the biggest surprise isn’t fear, it’s how calm and surreal the experience feels once you’re in the water with them.
It depends where you go and how it’s done.
In some places around the world, especially in parts of the Philippines, whale sharks are regularly fed to keep them in one location for tourism.
This can disrupt their natural migratory patterns, disrupt their natural feeding behavior, make them dependent on humans for food and create overcrowded, stressful environments with large numbers of swimmers.
There are also places where dozens of people surround a single whale shark, which can cause stress and interfere with its natural behavior.
That’s not what we do.
Our approach is centered around ethical, low-impact encounters where the animals remain completely wild and in control of the interaction.
We never bait, feed, or lure whale sharks in any way. We only go out during their natural migration season, and we follow local regulations designed to protect them, including limits on how many people can be in the water at once and strict rules around distance and behavior.
The goal is simple: to witness these animals respectfully, without changing their behavior.
