What to Expect

Get ready to explore one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. This 8-day Albanian Adventure is your invitation into the heart of the Balkans, a land of towering alpine peaks, crystal-clear rivers, and vibrant, welcoming culture. Designed for travellers who crave raw beauty and meaningful connection, this journey takes you deep into Albanian culture, where farm-to-table meals, mountain hospitality, and breath taking landscapes meet.

Expect to kayak across the fjord-like waters of Lake Koman, boat through the crystal blue Shala River, hike over the legendary Valbona Pass, and wander through trails to discover alpine villages like Theth and Valbona. Along the way, you’ll share local meals, dance under the stars, and build real connections with your travel crew.

Although we are going remote on this adventure of a lifetime, you won’t be roughing it. This adventure comes with a sprinkle of luxury, with remote lakefront stays, refined guesthouses, swimming pools, and all the comforts you need.

In the middle of the journey, we stay in traditional village homestays where supporting local communities comes first. The luxury softens here, but the comfort remains, and these nights are often the most memorable. It’s where the real magic happens: sharing meals crafted by local hands, hearing stories from the families who live here, and soaking in the rugged beauty that surrounds you.

  • Kayak along Lake Koman
  • Stay in remote lakefront hotels and cosy, local homestays
  • Cruise through the Shala River by boat

Itinerary

Welcome to Albania, folks! Our Albania Adventure tour will kick off in Tirana with a welcome lunch together before making our way over to Shkodër, which acts as a gateway to the beautiful Lake Koman and the Albanian Alps.

Our first evening is all about getting to know one another and eating delicious Albanian cuisine in Shkoder. A tasty group dinner will be in order before we buckle up our boots and set off on our adventure tomorrow.

Note: You will be able to store baggage that you don't want to take with you here for an additional cost. We will pick this up on the way back down to Fishte on our second to last day.

Lunch, Dinner
Boutique hotel

From Shkodër, a shuttle will pick us up bright and early, taking us to the ferry at the Komani Port. Here you’ll get your first snapshot of the incredible views at the man-made Lake Koman reservoir that we get to enjoy over the next couple of days.

We will set sail along the Drin River for about 45 minutes before we get to our lush lakeside destination in Koman. Here we will settle in and enjoy a delicious local lunch at the on-site restaurant. The afternoon will be spent exploring the river on a kayak and taking in the views of the giant mountains around us.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After an early breakfast, we’ll head out by boat while the water is calm and the crowds are still hours away. The journey into the Shala River (Lumi i Shalës) is unforgettable - towering rock walls, bright turquoise water, and that surreal “Thailand of Albania” feel that makes this place so special. You’ll have time to swim, relax on the riverbanks, or simply soak up the scenery.

In the afternoon, for those who are up for it, we will set off on a gentle trek to a nearby village. Along the way, you’ll get a glimpse into daily life in this remote corner of the country. Expect mountain hospitality, quiet trails, and a pace that lets you really take in the landscape.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Boutique hotel

Today, we will be packing up and jumping back on the ferry to continue through the Drin River to Fierzë. From Fierzë, we will be picked up by a minivan and taken to our gorgeous homestay in the mountain village of Valbona.

Soaring mountains, lush valleys, and quaint guesthouses are what you can expect from Valbona. The village itself is located in the eastern part of the Albanian Alps and sits at about 730m (2,300 ft) above sea level. As it is rather difficult to reach, you’ll find that it’s a very small, sleepy village full of guesthouses for hikers.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Homestay

Today, we will set off from Valbona on foot toward another mountain village called Theth, over the popular Valbona Pass trail.

The Valbona Pass has connected the valleys of Theth and Valbona for centuries. It can only be accessed on foot and reaches 1795m at its peak. The 15 km+ hike will take about 6 hours, and we will climb approx 1000m in elevation. This is our most active day of the tour and does require a reasonable fitness level.

The alpine meadows, towering peaks, and rocky slopes make for a pretty spectacular view, and the challenge of the climb is well worth it.

We will receive a packed lunch from our homestay, however, there are also a couple of stops along the way where smaller shops have set up to sell cold drinks, byrek, or flija (traditional food made with layers of dough).

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Homestay

Today will be spent exploring the spectacular town of Theth, the most well-preserved alpine village in Albania. Located within the Theth National Park, the village has been declared a Protected Historic Centre due to its gorgeous natural beauty.

Our morning will include a shorter trek to visit the famous, stone-built Catholic church (Kisha e Thethit) and the Theth waterfall before heading back for lunch. In the afternoon, we will take a shuttle down to the short 45 minute walk to visit the Blue Eye (Syri Kaltër).

You can take a chilly dip here - if you dare! Once we’ve seen the impressive pool of blue, we will hike the 45 minutes back to the car park and jump in a shuttle back to Theth for our second night here.

Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch
Homestay

From Theth, we will set off on the 3-hour journey to the beautiful village of Fishtë (just south of Shkoder).

The afternoon in Fishtë will be spent at the Mrizi i Zanave farm and restaurant, where we will learn all about Albanian Cuisine and sustainable farming practices. We will enjoy a final dinner together at their farm-to-table restaurant.

Day 08 :

The tour finishes on day 8. We will have breakfast together in the morning, then head to Tirana where we will say our goodbyes.

Why Travel Albania With Us?

At Elsewheria, we specialise in taking curious travellers to the kinds of places that are hard to get to, and even harder to forget. These are not easy places to navigate alone, but that’s where we come in. With local partnerships, trusted guides, and seamless logistics, we take the stress out of the unknown so you can focus on what matters; connecting with culture, nature, and a like-minded crew of fellow adventurers.

Tucked between Greece, Montenegro, and North Macedonia, the tiny Balkan nation of Albania often gets skipped by travellers racing between more “popular” destinations. But that’s exactly what makes it so special.

Here, you’ll find rugged alpine peaks, deep river canyons, endless mountain trails, and villages where time seems to stand still. The infrastructure is limited. Many areas are only accessible by ferry, 4×4, or on foot. Cell service fades. Roads wind into the wilderness and then disappear deep into valleys and peaks.

Our route takes you far beyond the bustling cities and into the wild heart of Albania. You’ll kayak through epic lakes carved into the mountains, trek the legendary Valbona Pass, and swim in the icy turquoise springs of Theth.

Travelling to Albania with Elsewheria means going deep into one of Europe’s last untouched regions, with none of the stress and all of the soul. This isn’t just a trip. It’s an adventure into the unknown, the unspoiled, and the unforgettable.

Are flights included?

No, flights are not included in the cost of the trip. Most travellers will fly into Tirana International Airport (TIA).

How active is this tour?

The pace is moderate.

We have one big day on day 5 where we will hike the famous Valbona Pass. This will be done at a moderate pace and we will stick together as a group. You can either hike with your backpack or we can have it transported to Theth for you.

All other activities can be opted out of but include hiking, kayaking, boating and more. There will also be plenty of time to sit back, relax and take in the magnificent views of the Albanian Alps.

Can I book private accommodations?

Yes. Single supplements are available for an additional charge. Let us know at the time of booking if you prefer a private room.

What is the food in Albania like?

Albanian food is a delicious mix of Mediterranean freshness, Balkan comfort, and Ottoman spice. You can expect the food to be flavourful and hearty. You can expect large portions that are often shared. Our meals times are one of the best times of day where we can indulge in locally produced cuisine and debrief about the days adventures!

What are the sleeping arrangements?

All shared rooms on our trips have 2 people per room, each with their own bed. We will partner you with an adventure buddy of the same gender - an amazing way to make new friends! If you're booking as a pair, just let us know, and we'll make sure you’re roomed together. If you have any questions about sleeping arrangements, feel free to get in touch 🙂

If you'd prefer your own room, our solo supplement option is available when you book and gives you a private room for the entire journey. Please note that private rooms are very limited, so be quick or you might miss out.

A full packing list will be sent to you once your spot in confirmed.

The Valbona Pass hike is a village to village trail, so we will need to take all of our luggage with us. There is an option for pay for it to be transported by horse for an additional cost.

There will be luggage storage available in Shkoder if you wish to leave your luggage while we head into the Alps, we will pick it up when we pass back through on our way to Fishte on our second to last day.

What types of accommodation will we be staying in?
