What to Expect

Join us on a secret archipelago in Tonga and swim with gentle giants for the experience of a lifetime.

After years of searching the world for the most meaningful marine encounters, we’ve found a quiet island paradise without the crowds. This truly special spot we are keeping secret, but it’s  a short domestic flight from Tongatepu and one of the most untouched whale destinations on earth, where only a handful of boats operate across the entire island chain.

Each year, humpback whales travel from Antarctica to give birth, nurse their calves and socialize in these warm waters. With so few boats around, encounters happen calmly and without crowds, in small groups of just four swimmers at a time. Watch mothers and calves resting below the surface, curious juveniles drifting closer, or males breaching nearby, and listen through hydrophones as humpback song travels through the water.

Life on land is just as immersive. Evenings unfold around a beachside fire and communal dinners, while the island’s acoustic dome hosts yoga, breathwork and sound healing. It’s less about mastering a practice and more about settling the body, so that stillness carries with you into the water and helps you stay present for each encounter.

  • Morning yoga and breathwork sessions

Itinerary

You will catch a 50-minute domestic flight from Tongatapu (TBU, Tonga's main airport) to our secret location.

To make things as seamless as possible, we offer to book these flights for you (flights not included). These flights depart around 10am but schedules do change. We recommend arriving the day before and spending one night in Tongatapu.

Upon arrival at our secret spot (revealed after booking), our team will greet you at the airport. From there, we transfer by boat to our remote island base surrounded by turquoise waters and coral reefs.

If we’re lucky, we’ll get our first glimpse of breaching whales as we head towards our incredible home for the next week. After settling into our glamping accommodation, we will gather for a welcome dinner and trip briefing as the sun sets over the Pacific.

Dinner

These days move between the dome, the boat, and the island, with whale swimming as the anchor. Mornings begin in the acoustic dome with yoga, breathwork, or a sound healing session, crystal bowls, drums, and quiet movement to settle the body before the day on the water.

After an early breakfast, we head out by boat across the surrounding islands in search of humpback whales, listening through the hydrophone for whale song carrying beneath the surface. When whales are present, we slip gently into the water in small groups of four with a guide, keeping every encounter calm, unhurried, and respectful.

Lunch will be served onboard or on a nearby island, running until early afternoon and leaving time on land. Evenings unfold around communal dinners and a ceremonial fire on the beach, sometimes with an optional sound healing session, a talk on whale behavior, or space to get involved with the on-site marine conservation work.

Sundays are a day of rest in Tonga, where no one is allowed to operate boat charters. This will give us the chance to change up the pace a little and visit a nearby Tongan village of around one hundred residents. Community spirit is central. Life here is collaborative, grounded, and shared.

There will also be plenty of time on Sunday for yoga, Island trails, shore snorkeling, relaxing, games, and more.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, we transfer back to the airport for your domestic flight out.

While this marks the official end of the expedition, many travelers choose to extend their stay in Tonga or continue exploring the South Pacific.

Where You'll Stay

We’ll be staying in twin-share glamping accommodation right on the water’s edge, so you’ll be sharing your room with another guest. These rooms can be configured into either a double bed for a couple traveling together, or two singles for solo travelers. Each of the rooms sits on a raised wooden platform, with a spacious tent, an ensuite bathroom with solar-powered shower, a comfortable bed and a private balcony looking out over the ocean. It’s simple, comfortable, and close to nature, powered by rainwater and solar energy, with no single-use plastic on the island.

Beyond your tent, the sanctuary opens onto shared spaces built for connection: a beachside dining and gathering area with a ceremonial fire circle, and a 10-meter acoustic dome tucked in the forest, used for yoga, meditation, and sound healing with crystal singing bowls and drums.

Mornings often begin with yoga or breathwork, evenings wind down by the fire, and many guests fall asleep to the sound of the sea, sometimes joined by whale song drifting in from the water.

Why Travel to Tonga With Us?

The Kingdom of Tonga is one of the only places on Earth where it is legally permitted to swim with humpback whales. Each year, these magnificent animals migrate thousands of miles from Antarctica to the warm tropical waters of the South Pacific to give birth and raise their calves.

While several regions in Tonga offer whale tourism and some of these areas are undoubtedly crowded, the Secret Islands where we are based remain one of the most untouched and special. This island chain sits between Tongatapu and Vavaʻu and is home to only a small number of tourism operators. Vast stretches of ocean remain completely quiet and uncrowded. We stay at the ONLY accommodation option on our end of the island, so you won’t see any other guests outside of our group. This is a truly intimate and unique expedition.

In contrast to destinations like Moorea or Vavaʻu, where boat traffic can be high during peak whale season, our location offers something rare: space! Fewer boats mean calmer waters, less pressure on the whales, and more natural and curiosity-led interactions.

Our guides are experienced marine professionals who prioritize whale welfare above everything else. We never chase whales or force encounters. Instead, we wait for whales to show curiosity and interest before we enter the water.

These respectful practices often result in extraordinary interactions where whales approach swimmers on their own terms and engage with playful curiosity.

Traveling with Elsewheria means fully immersing yourself in this remote ocean environment without worrying about logistics. Our island base, experienced guides, and carefully designed itinerary create an intimate expedition where guests arrive as strangers but leave as friends connected by a shared love for the ocean.
